MVC 5 or ASP.NET Core 2 MVC?

Hi,

I come from an ASP.NET Webforms background due to my job requirements. Recently the company I work for migrated all its webapplications to AWS and I decided is time to upgrade to a newer technology, so I'd like to know if I can go directly to ASP.NET Core MVC or if is recommended to first learn MVC 5, or just MVC 5. I took a Laravel 5 course last year, which is similar to ASP.NET MVC.
